General Lolita

When did you first see lolita?

I honestly can't remember, it was when I was 14/15, I think? I remember looking up pictures of cosplay-tier steampunk lolita dresses and dreaming, I remember following livejournal guides on where to buy things, I remember opening my bodyline package, and the trepidation with which my friend and I went to a cafe wearing our outfits. A very Texan-Suburian woman in her 40's or 50's gushed about how we looked like dolls. Did I even wear makeup? Did I even have a hair accessory? I don't think I did. Those are really my earliest memories of it, I don't remember the first time I saw it.

What is your favourite lolita memory?

I think just putting on my first few pieces with a petticoat, it was magical & transformative. I had never experienced anything quite like it.

Have you had any dreams about lolita?

Yes, I sleep poorly and dream pretty much every night. Lolita features in my dreams pretty regularly, maybe once or twice a month.

What is the strangest thing you have done in lolita?

I honestly haven't done anything particularly strange in lolita afaik.

Do you match your room with your aesthetic?

I would very much like to, but we're saving up money to buy our own house, and I just feel like it's a bit of a waste to spend too much decorating the house we rent now in the style I want, because it will take a lot of time and searching and planning.

Is there such thing as a lolita “lifestyle”?

If you live a life in line with your capital-A Aesthetic - beyond just clothing - I think you can live a lifestyle that is in line with what you understand the philosophy behind lolita to be? I don't think it looks like just one specific set of hobbies or interests, though.

Do you listen to "lolita music"?

Like visual kei? Not really.

What is your worst lolita memory?

...................................................washing a dress (that will remain nameless) which was made with rayon. I completely ruined it.

If you could make any lolita brand could do a collab with any brand, what would that collab be?

Moitie x Sheglit.

What sort of lolita advice would you give to your younger self?

Get back to wearing it sooner! I think it's ok that I didn't continue to wear it in my mid to late teens, but just think of how cool it would have been to wear it while studying at university in the middle of Edinburgh...
